When I write a story, I have to play it as a movie in my head before I can really get it on paper. As with most movies, the soundtrack can make or break it. I sometimes carefully put together a playlist of songs that fit the “film” to help me write. But the other day, as I was falling into the YouTube rabbit hole, an old reggae song played and it reminded me of the characters from my short story “Under the Canopy.”
It made me think, “These women would have surely been playing some lover’s rock on their journey, some smooth reggae, to help ease the tension. Perhaps it’s the juxtaposition of a beautiful song like “I Feel Good” that lured the kidnappers to Maggie and Adriana’s car in the first place? And how fitting would it be for Junior Kelly’s “Love So Nice” to play at the moment they are snatched? This was to be their break-up trip, after all. The soundtrack came together so perfectly!
Then this morning, I see an article on GalleyCat about a platform that allows writers to add soundtracks to eBooks. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS? 1- I missed a huge opportunity by not creating Booktrack myself–I’ve been creating soundtracks for stories all my life! That could have been my goldmine! and 2- I may be rethinking this whole wait-for-an-agent-to-sell-my-work-to-a-publisher deal, and self-publish a bunch of eBooks with a soundtrack!
My whole Friday just got greater.
