Knowing Your Worth

My darlings! How neglectful have I been? In my defense, I’ve been very active on my Facebook page, and it’s replaced blogging for me. But if I’m going to pay for a URL and hosting, I might as well use this platform, yes? OK. Then let’s have a chat about worth.

Previously, I wrote a post titled Calculating Your Worth to help freelancers figure out what to charge potential clients. I stand by that, especially today when I had to fight the urge to reduce my fee just to collect a check. A potential client found me via Google (holla!), but decided that what I was charging was not in her budget, and I can understand and respect that. Old me would have countered with “what were you looking to pay?” and roll with that, but NEW me pays a branding consultant to help her grow this business, and I suspect she would have flown to NY to knock me senseless if I didn’t stick to my rates.

And she’d be right. I have experience. I’m a good editor. I can help you with that rough manuscript. I deserve my rate.

In the end, I directed the potential client to Elance and wished her well. And just like that, I taught an old dog (ME) a new trick.

How are you all doing 12 days into the New Year?

xoxo,
Raquel Ivelisse
