It is always important to be a man or woman of your word. As my generation grew up saying (in the streets of Bed-Stuy), “Word is bond!” Living by this “code” is the only reason I left my house to attend the Meet Your Local Author Day at La Casa Azul Bookstore yesterday.
Don’t get me wrong—I was psyched to go last week, which is why I RSVP’d for it. But on Saturday night I lost a nasty fight with my allergies, was forced to take a pill for it and then proceeded to eat condensed milk from a can while making a coquito for a friend’s holiday party. All three of these incidents made me feel so sick! Not to mention the illness in my soul at the news of a family friend struggling for his life at the hospital. I was very close to calling and canceling at the last minute.
In the end I did go and it was a great opportunity to meet other working writers in the City. As an added bonus, I got to FINALLY meet Junot Diaz (This Is How You Lose Her), as well as Ernesto Quiñones (Bodega Dreams). Thanks to store owner Aurora Anaya-Cerda and her amazing team for putting it all together. It was worth keeping my word!
Also, look at my new books:
How was your weekend?
