A lot of what keeps me from just writing is the chaos with which I surround myself. We won’t even touch upon the fact that this chaos is self-inflicted in order to have an excuse to not write and therefore avoid rejection and people figuring out I’m not the writing genius I claim to be. Oh no. We’re not going to discuss that at all.

Not the dream space, but I manage, sort of.

Instead, let’s discuss what the ideal writing space would look and feel like. Or at least my ideal writing space.

I’ve always wanted it to be in a small room, preferably an attic space, with a window where I can look out and see the whole city but not feel like I’m in it. I wanted the room to be filled with cushiony spaces where I could plop down and brainstorm story ideas or just daydream about my Oscar speech(es). I’d have a laptop in the corner somewhere, of course–as much as I loathe modern technology I must admit that it’s become more difficult to function without it–but on my desk I’d have a typewriter. That’s right, a typewriter. And spread out all over the place would be my notebooks, filled with thoughts and story bits just waiting to be sewn together.

My record player would be in there, as would my entire vinyl collection, but I’d also have a Bose™ speaker for my iPod for all the newer tunes I’d need to keep me going. Most of the walls would be either cork or white boards, to keep all my notes and important dates organized, and around my window would hang photos of my family so that every time I’d look out I’d see them, too.

I dream of this room often. It’s so beautiful and real in my head. I suppose the only way to make it happen is to hurry up and finish these stories and scripts, though, right?

The reason my eyesight is bad & my back is a wreck.

What’s your ideal space like?

My ideal workspace: Large desk, with enough drawers to keep the desktop completely clear. On the desktop: Laptop, second (and maybe third) monitor, iPad on an arm mount, speakers, mouse, and post-it notes. Bright natural light. Water cooler. Treadmill, stationary bike. TV. Large, comfortable chair to read documents.

Sounds cool. Can I bring my papasan chair and chill in your office? I promise not to leave (many) popcorn crumbs all over the place 🙂
